Ethical Decision-Making in Physical Therapy

By Susan McPhail Wittjen, PT, PhD

Case 13

You are a new graduate and have been working in this rehabilitation facility for only three months. You enjoy working here and the staff often goes out socially after work. There are usually students here from various universities and sometimes the students are included in the after work activities. Recently when a group of therapists and a student were at a restaurant you heard one of the clinical instructors tell the student about some of the problems that one of the other students was having. You felt very uncomfortable about this but no one else said anything, and you don't know if you should worry about this.

Are there ethical issues?

Do students have a right to confidentiality?

What should and could you have done?
