Ethical Decision-Making in Physical Therapy

By Susan McPhail Wittjen, PT, PhD

Principle 10

A physical therapist shall endeavor to address the health needs of society.

While there are many ways in which physical therapists can help address the health needs of the public, the guide encourages the provision of pro bono work (as your practice permits) for those who cannot pay for services when possible. The principle of justice is evident as physical therapists recognize the importance of physical therapy to persons who may not be able to afford a health plan that includes rehabilitation services. Since health care coverage in our country does not necessarily include physical therapy for all, physical therapists have the opportunity to assist those who do not have the financial means to acquire necessary physical therapy care. This is a good example of how the Code embodies ideals for which physical therapists can strive. There is no case related to this principle, but you should stop and consider how you might incorporate this principle into your practice.
